Civil and military commissions, Michigan, 1818-1821.

Record group 81-42 consists of records on Michigan civil and military commissions for the years 1818-1821. Records are printed forms filled out and signed by Lewis Cass and William Woodbridge or their clerk. The military commissions give only name, rank and unit. The civil commissions give name and position of appointment, like justice of the peace, sheriff, coroner, register of probate, clerk and justice of county court, supervisor of roads and highways, constable, inspector of provisions, surveyor, county commissioner, auctioneer, prosecuting attorney, etc.

Lewis Cass (October 9, 1782 – June 17, 1866) was an American military officer, politician, and statesman. He represented Michigan in the United States Senate and served in the Cabinets of two U.S. Presidents, Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan.
